About us

We want to open the Evonik ecosystem with APIs to consumers in a secure way, creating a single entry point for providers and consumers of APIs. Our goal is to facilitate the discovery of APIs in order to increase the reuse as well as ease the integration of multiple applications.

API Management

Organizations build APIs (Application Programming Interface) to make assets of value easily accessible within and outside the bounds of an organization.

What are APIs?

APIs are best explained using a metaphor. Imagine going to eat at a restaurant. You're hungry and you know there is food available in the kitchen. You expect the food to be skillfully prepared by the chef. For hygiene reasons, you are not allowed in the kitchen or to get the food yourself. This is where the waiter - or the API - comes in: trained to take your order from the menu and to serve you your meal while at the same time keeping you out of the kitchen.

APIs expose a business service or an enterprise asset. An API defines a contract for applications on how to talk to each other over a network e.g., the shared data and its format.

Endpoints are the locations where requests to the API are sent. Usually, we refer to REST web endpoints which are reached via HTTP request. Not to be confused with endpoints in the context of endpoint security where the term refers to end user devices such as laptops and smart phones.

What is API Management?

API management refers to the concept of creating, publishing, and managing APIs within an organization. The term is also used for the API management platform which provides a central catalogue of APIs for developers also known as the developer portal.

For API consumers (client developers), like other development teams or even external partners, API Management is like the menu at the restaurant. The consumers can browse the APIs using the developer portal and subscribe to them (that is, request permission to use).

For API developers, API Management imposes governance, accountability and security of exposed applications, manages authorization and provisioning of services centrally via one platform, and enables stable operation, monitoring and monetization of information assets using common rules.
